PayPal is a payment processing company headquartered in Singapore, and I currently use it for receiving payments from overseas customers.
The main reason is that it supports multiple local currencies, though not all. However, PayPal deducts transaction fees and currency conversion fees (when converting foreign currencies to Japanese yen) before depositing the funds into my account.
For the first transaction, although the payment amount was displayed, the funds were held in a "Pending" status for a long time, and I had to wait many days before I could "Transfer" the funds.
This is reportedly part of PayPal’s consumer protection policy. If a buyer files a "Dispute" while the payment is still on hold, the transaction may be canceled and the full amount refunded to the buyer. This long holding period is likely intended to accommodate such situations.
After completing several transactions smoothly and without any disputes, the system begins to allow instant transfers of funds to your bank account once payments are received.
Additionally, PayPal allows you to generate a formatted Payment Receipt, which can be submitted as proof of payment for customs declarations and other documentation purposes.
I also considered using Stripe for payment processing. However, when registering an account in Japan, the supported currency is limited to Japanese yen. Charging international customers in yen could lead to confusion, so I decided not to use it.
