There are several options for international shipping, with well-known carriers such as DHL, FedEx, UPS, and Japan Post. However, since DHL and FedEx do not have branches in Amakusa, using their services is not feasible.
Japan Post, on the other hand, is available in every town across Japan. For international parcels, they offer reliable EMS (Express Mail Service), standard airmail, and cost-effective surface mail.
Japan Post’s international parcel service has several advantages:
It is generally unrestricted except for conflict zones.
The shipping label is linked with required customs documents.
Packages can be tracked.
Email notifications about the shipment status can be sent to registered addresses.
Shipping fees can be paid by credit card.
Any additional documents required for customs are handled together with the shipping label.
Overall, their system is quite user-friendly and functional.
However, in terms of cost, it tends to be slightly more expensive than Yamato Transport’s World Portal (which uses UPS for international delivery). So for shipments to the U.S., I use Yamato’s World Portal—since UPS is an American company and is well integrated there. For other regions such as Europe, Asia, and Australia, I use Japan Post’s international parcel service.
(UPS, depending on the country, may not accept packages if either the sender or receiver is an individual, and their delivery network can be limited to certain cities.)
